TYPES OF FIRES
1. Dry or paper fire is a fire that burns very hot and fast. Paper and wood products are the
primary fuel source. This fire produces light flaky soot. This type of fire and soot is easily
cleaned up using chemical sponges.
2. Wet fire- This fire burns slower and cooler than a paper fire. Petroleum products are the
fuel source ( candles and plastics ). This type of fire produces oily soot that smears very
easily. Requires wet cleaning of surfaces and often requires repainting.
3. Protein fire- Burned meat and organic matter. Has very distinct meaty odor. This fire
produces smoke which coats all surfaces with a yellow residue. This must be hand
cleaned with special de-greasers. Cleanup must be very thurow or odor will remain.
SAFETY AND PREVENTION
1. Check electrical connections and outlets- Overloaded outlets and shorted out wires
cause electrical fires.
2. Have fireplaces cleaned yearly to prevent creosote buildup.- Creosote is a residue left in
the chimney flue from burning woods in the fireplace. Creosote is highly combustible and
will ignite if there is excessive buildup. Have a licensed chimney sweep do a yearly
inspection and or cleaning..
3. Watch items cooking in the kitchen.
4. Have smoke detectors and fire extinguishers in your home.
DO’S AND DON’TS AFTER A FIRE
1. Do not touch anything without latex gloves on. The oils on your fingers can set the soot
on things such as drywall, upholstery, drapery, books, ceramics and wood furniture.
2. Do not consume food items exposed to smoke or canned goods exposed to excessive
heat.
3. After fire has occurred, coat any brass or chrome finishes with some Vaseline. Soot is
highly acidic and will cause pitting in these types of finishes. ( bath fixtures, chandeliers,
light fixtures. )
4. Move pets out of the loss area.
5. Do not attempt to clean your laundry. In most cases a professional dry cleaner who
specializes in fire restoration should handle the clothes. Set aside some emergency
clothes and in most cases they can have those in a couple of days.
6. Get a fire proof safe for valuables and important documents.
