Water  can cause mold to your property if not properly mitigated. Fortunately, with the proper
methods and procedures, we can prevent the growth of mold. If it is currently present, we can
remediate it and provide a clean living environment. I will briefly go over some common facts
and fallacies concerning mold.
You do not need to be certified to remediate mold in Illinois, Paul Davis is IICRC certified in
mold.

Mold facts

1. Mold has been with us for thousands of years and is even mentioned in the Bible. Mold is
also a part of our environment naturally.

2. Mold spores produce Mycotoxins which are potentially harmful to us.

3. In the proper environment, mold can begin growing within 72 hours.

4. Mold needs 3 things in order to start growing. Moisture, a food source and stagnant air.

Moisture can come from any number of sources such as, water damages, leaky or improperly
ventilated roofs, leaky appliances and windows and extremely high humidity. This is why rapid
response to water emergencies is so important because if left for 2-3 days more damage can
occur. As far as food sources, mold can and will grow on drywall and paneling, roof sheathing
and joists, hardwood and laminate flooring, paints and adhesives and other natural materials.
Mold also loves stagnant air, so attics, behind paneling and crawl spaces make ideal habitats for
growth.

Mold fallacies

1. Black mold is toxic mold.
Mold comes in a variety of colors including green, red, tan and purple depending on type and
severity of the mold. Any color mold can be potentially harmful.

2. Mold can grow on carpet.
Mold CANNOT grow on carpet. Most carpet is made of polypropylene, which is plastic. Mold
can grow on the dirt that is in the carpet or on the concrete floor. Mushrooms can even grow
out of this dirt.

3. Bleach can be used to kill mold or cover it up.
This presents a number of problems. First, dead mold spores can still be harmful. Just as
venom from a dead snake can still kill you. Second, you can not just cover it up as again you
will have the same problem. YOU MUST PHYSICALLY REMOVE THE MOLD!!!

4. The do it yourself approach.
While this may be okay for a small spot on the wall. On extensive damage ( over 30 continuous
sq ft ) special training, equipment and procedures are required. See below once you have Mold.
If these procedures are not followed the risk of cross contamination becomes greater.

Once you have Mold

1. Call a professional such as Paul Davis Restoration, and have them look over the job.

2. If you feel sick see your doctor. Only a medical professional can determine if exposure to
mold has been causing any illnesses.

3. Do not attempt to do it yourself. Proper remediation requires HEPA filtration, personal
protective equipment (P.P.E.), containment and proper disposal techniques.
